Eddy Current Testing (ECT)

Eddy Current Testing (ECT) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface and near-surface flaws in electrically conductive materials. The technique is based on electromagnetic induction, where eddy currents are induced in the test material and monitored for disruptions caused by defects, material variations, or corrosion.

How ECT Works:
1. Electromagnetic Induction: An alternating current passes through a coil, generating a magnetic field.
2. Eddy Current Generation: When the coil is placed near a conductive material, circulating eddy currents are induced.
3. Defect Detection: Flaws such as cracks, pits, or thinning disrupt the flow of eddy currents.
4. Signal Analysis: Changes in the magnetic field are analyzed to identify and characterize defects.

Applications of ECT:
• Inspection of heat exchanger and condenser tubes
• Detection of surface cracks in welds and machined components
• Aircraft and aerospace structural inspections
• Corrosion detection in pipelines and storage tanks
• Sorting of materials based on conductivity and heat treatment variations
