Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test (UPV)

The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) Test is a non-destructive test (NDT) method used to evaluate the quality and uniformity of concrete. It measures the travel time of ultrasonic pulses passing through the concrete, which helps in assessing its homogeneity, integrity, and relative compressive strength.

Applications of UPV Test:

  • Assessment of concrete quality and uniformity in structures
  • Detection of cracks, voids, honeycombing, and other internal flaws
  • Estimating the relative compressive strength of concrete
  • Monitoring deterioration in old structures

Method: Ultrasonic pulses are transmitted through concrete using a pair of transducers. The travel time is measured, and the velocity is calculated. Higher pulse velocity indicates good quality, dense concrete, while lower velocity suggests defects or deterioration.
