Ultrasonic Flaw Detection (UT)

Ultrasonic Flaw Detection is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method for identifying and sizing internal or surface-breaking defects in materials. The technique uses high-frequency sound waves that travel through the material and reflect back when they encounter discontinuities such as cracks, voids, or inclusions.

How It Works: A probe generates ultrasonic waves that propagate through the material. Reflected signals (echoes) from flaws or boundaries are displayed on a digital screen, allowing defect detection, sizing, and depth measurement with high accuracy.

Applications of Ultrasonic Flaw Detection:

  • Inspection of welds in pipelines, pressure vessels, and structural steel
  • Detection of cracks, lack of fusion, porosity, and laminations in metals
  • Quality control of forgings, castings, and rolled products
