Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging (UTG)

Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging (UTG) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique used to measure the remaining wall thickness of metallic and non-metallic components. It is particularly effective for detecting material loss due to corrosion, erosion, or wear in service-exposed equipment, without requiring cutting or damaging the part.

How It Works:
An ultrasonic transducer emits high-frequency sound waves into the material. The sound waves travel through the thickness and reflect back from the opposite surface. By measuring the time of flight and knowing the velocity of sound in the material, the exact thickness is calculated and displayed digitally.

Applications of UTG:

  • Thickness monitoring of pipelines, storage tanks, and pressure vessels
  • Corrosion and erosion surveys in refineries, power plants, and marine industries
  • Inspection of ship hulls, boilers, and heat exchanger tubes
  • Assessment of structural integrity in construction and heavy engineering
  • Quality control of plates, sheets, and machined components

Standards Followed: ASTM E797, ASME Section V, ISO 16809
