Pile Integrity Testing (PIT)

Pile Integrity Testing (PIT), also known as Low Strain Dynamic Testing, is a non-destructive method used to evaluate the structural soundness and continuity of deep foundation piles. It helps detect defects such as cracks, voids, necking, or changes in cross-section along the pile length without excavation.

Applications of Pile Integrity Testing:

  • Assessment of pile quality in new construction projects
  • Detection of cracks, honeycombing, and voids within piles
  • Verification of pile length and cross-sectional consistency
  • Condition assessment of old or existing foundation piles
  • Quality assurance in bridge, building, port, and infrastructure projects

Testing Method: A small hammer is used to strike the pile head, and the response is measured with an accelerometer or geophone. The recorded waveforms (time-domain signals) are analyzed to identify anomalies in the pile shaft.

Standards Followed: ASTM D5882, IS 14893, and other international codes.
